About PDF to PNG

What this tool does

It renders PDF pages as PNG images in your browser using the pdf.js library. Choose the pages and a quality level, preview each result and download pages individually or all together as a ZIP. Your file is not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Enter the pages to convert, such as 2-4, 7. The box starts with page 1, you can convert up to 30 pages per run, and an empty box means all pages (if there are 30 or fewer).
  3. Pick Small (about 110 DPI), Standard (about 144 DPI) or High (about 216 DPI).
  4. Click Convert to PNG, then download the images.

When PNG is the right choice

PNG is lossless, so text, tables, charts and screenshots stay crisp with no compression artefacts. That makes it a good format for slides, diagrams and documents that are mostly text. The trade-off is file size: a photo-heavy page can be several megabytes as a PNG. For photo pages, PDF to JPG makes smaller files.

Quality and file size

Higher quality means more pixels. High (about 216 DPI) roughly doubles each side of the image compared with Small, so the file is around four times larger. Pick the lowest level that still looks sharp where you will use it.

Limits

  • Pages are placed on a white background. Transparent areas are not preserved.
  • Large pages at High quality can be too big for the browser to draw. If you see an error, lower the quality or convert fewer pages at once.
  • Non-embedded fonts are replaced by similar ones, so rendering can differ slightly from your PDF viewer.
  • Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
  • The output is a flat picture: the text cannot be selected or searched. Use PDF to Text for the text itself.

To pull a few pages out of a PDF as a new PDF rather than images, use Split PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard (about 144 DPI) suits screens and sharing. High (about 216 DPI) is sharper for printing or zooming, but PNG files get large and need more memory.
