How to Merge and Split PDF Files for Free, Without Uploading Them
Step-by-step guide to combining PDFs and pulling pages out of one with ToolHive's in-browser tools, plus honest notes on what they cannot do and what to use instead.
Merging and splitting are the two PDF jobs that most people actually need
Combining a resume with certificates, joining scanned pages into one file, or pulling a few pages out of a long document are everyday tasks. ToolHive has two PDF tools that do this inside your browser, with no upload and no account: Merge PDF Files and Split PDF. This guide explains how each works, what to watch out for, and what to do for PDF jobs the site does not cover.
How to merge PDF files
- Open the Merge PDF Files tool and choose your PDFs. You can add files more than once.
- Use the up and down arrows to put them in the order you want. The top file's pages come first. Use the X to drop a file.
- Click Merge PDFs, then Download to save
merged.pdf. The result shows the page count and size so you can check that nothing is missing.
Some practical tips:
- Name files so the order is obvious before you start, for example
01-cover-letter.pdf,02-resume.pdf. It saves reordering. - Check page sizes. Pages keep their own sizes, so a merged file can mix A4 and Letter pages. That is normal but can look uneven when printed.
- Mind the file size. The merged file is roughly the sum of its parts. If you need to email it and it is too big, shrink the source files first.
- Password-protected PDFs will not merge. The tool names the protected file. Remove the password in a PDF viewer, save a copy, and add that copy.
How to split a PDF
- Open Split PDF and choose one PDF. The tool shows how many pages it has.
- Type the page ranges you want, separated by commas. For a 10-page file,
1-3, 4-6, 9produces three PDFs of 3, 3 and 1 pages. - Click Split PDF. Each range gets its own Download button, with names like
report_pages_4-6.pdf.
Things to know:
- Pages are numbered from 1, and ranges are inclusive.
- Pages you do not list are simply left out, so a split is also the quickest way to extract pages. To pull out page 5 alone, enter
5. - There are no automatic modes such as "every 10 pages" or "by bookmark". For equal chunks, type the ranges yourself, like
1-10, 11-20, 21-30. - There is no ZIP download, so for many ranges you download each file separately.
- An out-of-range page, a reversed range or a typo gives an error message before any file is created.
What stays and what may not
Both tools copy the page content as it is: text, images, fonts, vector graphics and page sizes. Features that live at the document level, such as bookmarks (the outline panel) and fillable form fields, may not carry over to the new file. If your PDF relies on them, open the result and check before you send it.
Is it private?
The tools run in your browser using a JavaScript PDF library. The files you select are read on your own device and are not sent to ToolHive's servers, which is why the tool works with confidential papers such as contracts and ID copies. The usual caution still applies: use a device you trust, and delete downloaded copies you no longer need.
PDF jobs ToolHive does not do yet
ToolHive's PDF category lists many other operations, such as compression, conversion to Word or images, watermarking and password protection. Those pages do not process files yet, and they say so. Until they do, here is what works well elsewhere:
- Shrinking a large PDF: re-export it from the original document with a lower image quality setting, or use the "reduce file size" option in a desktop PDF reader.
- Converting a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file to PDF: use File, then Save As or Export in the Office app, or print to PDF.
- Adding a password: most desktop PDF editors and Office apps offer encryption when you export.
- Free desktop tools: PDFsam Basic handles merging, splitting, rotating and reordering offline.
Which tool for which job
- Several files into one: Merge PDF Files.
- One file into several, or just a few pages out of it: Split PDF.
- Everything else in PDF: see the PDF utilities category for the list, keeping in mind that only merge and split are working today.
