What Is GST in India?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced VAT, service tax, excise duty, and other levies in July 2017. It's a destination-based, multi-stage tax applied at every point of sale.

GST has four main rate slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, plus a 0% rate for essential goods. The 18% rate applies to most services and manufactured goods.

CGST, SGST, and IGST — What's the Difference?

GST in India is divided into three components based on the type of transaction:

  • CGST (Central GST) — collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales (within the same state). Typically half the applicable GST rate.
  • SGST (State GST) — collected by the State Government on intra-state sales. Typically the other half of the applicable GST rate.
  • IGST (Integrated GST) — collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales (between states). Equal to the full applicable GST rate.

For example, an 18% GST on an intra-state sale splits into 9% CGST + 9% SGST. On an inter-state sale, it's 18% IGST.

GST-Exclusive vs GST-Inclusive — Key Difference

This is where most people get confused:

  • GST-Exclusive (Add-on): GST is added on top of the base price. Base price ₹10,000 + 18% GST = ₹11,800 total.
  • GST-Inclusive (Reverse): The price already includes GST. Total price ₹11,800 — what is the base and GST amount?

Use our GST Calculator for add-on calculation, or our GST Inclusive Calculator to work backwards from a GST-inclusive price.
