Freight Class Calculator

The National Motor Freight Classification is the standard system LTL carriers use to price freight — denser, more compact shipments get a lower class number and generally cost less to ship per pound than bulky, low-density ones.

Density (kg per cubic foot) = weight ÷ volume, where volume is computed from your length × width × height in cm, converted to cubic feet. Higher density generally means a lower (cheaper) freight class.

This uses the real, standard density-to-class NMFC schedule, so it should match for straightforward general freight — but some product categories have NMFC-specific classifications beyond density alone (fragility, liability, storability), which this calculator doesn't account for. Confirm with your carrier for shipments with special handling considerations.

No — freight classification applies to LTL (less-than-truckload) freight shipments, typically palletized or bulky cargo. Small parcels shipped via courier use a different pricing system (see Dimensional Weight Calculator or Shipping Cost Calculator instead).
