Frequently Asked Questions

Under the CIF Incoterm, the seller pays for the goods, insurance, and freight all the way to the destination port — more of the shipment's cost and risk sits with the seller than under FOB, where the buyer takes over at the loading port.

Many countries, including India, use the CIF value as the base 'assessable value' for calculating import duty and IGST — see the Import Duty Calculator, which takes a CIF value as its starting input.

FOB stops at the loading port (seller pays ex-works + inland freight + export charges only). CIF goes further, adding international freight and insurance on top — so CIF is generally the higher figure for the same shipment.

Use your freight forwarder's quote or a reasonable estimate for planning purposes — for a customs filing, you'll need the actual, documented freight and insurance costs.
