What a slug is
A slug is the readable last part of a URL, such as best-budget-phones in /blog/best-budget-phones. This tool turns a title into one.
The exact rules
- Converts everything to lowercase.
- Replaces each run of characters that are not a to z or 0 to 9 with a single hyphen.
- Removes hyphens at the beginning and end.
- Cuts the result to 60 characters, which can leave a trailing hyphen if the cut falls on one.
Example: 10 Best Budget Phones (2025 Edition)! becomes 10-best-budget-phones-2025-edition.
Non-English text
Only plain English letters and digits survive. Accented letters and non-Latin scripts such as Devanagari are treated as separators and removed, so café becomes caf, and a fully Hindi title can produce an empty slug. For those titles, write an English or transliterated slug manually.
SEO tips
Keep slugs short, descriptive and free of dates you will have to update. Avoid changing a slug after publishing without setting up a redirect, because links to the old address will break.
